Twin State Manufacturing, Inc.

Liquid fertilizer containment structures at the Twin State, Inc. facilities were reconstructed and expanded to meet both state code and product storage requirements. Typical earthen containment dikes are not designed to manage spilled products so that released fluids from primary operational areas (i.e., areas around pumps, valves, hatches, etc.) come in contact with a minimum amount of liner area. Containment structures designed by Sand Creek Consultants, Inc. ensure that contouring of the containment liner is used to confine released products to specific areas and thereby direct fluids to a single location for collection. This minimizes the volume of soil (both the clay liner and protective earthen cover) from coming in contact with liquid fertilizer and therefore requiring remediation during future reconstruction efforts. The larger containment structure was reconstructed to contain 6 million gallons of liquid fertilizer.

Project work for both sites involved the following:

  • Designed earthen containment structures to meet state construction requirements
  • Tendered bids and selected contractor capable of meeting project goals
  • Oversaw the complete reconstruction of containment dikes including testing of soil to confirm density requirements
