Sand Creek Consultants designed a pilot study which was approved for installation by WDNR in 2001. Sand Creek then deployed a full-scale poplar and willow system in 2002 to control landfill leachate generation.

The site is a closed, older landfill previously generating considerable leachate volumes annually. Leachate generation has declined steadily as the trees have matured.
