Sand Creek took advantage of an open excavation to be proactive about groundwater remediation. Groundwater at a former fertilizer plant is impacted by nitrogen. A trench was installed in the open excavation, quickly backfilled with woodchips before water filled in, then buried beneath clean fill. The woodchip trench will intercept shallow groundwater moving below the site, providing a carbon source to naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria that remove nitrate from the groundwater. This was an inexpensive, last-minute addition to site work that will help prevent groundwater impacts from leaving the site. The trench will remain in service for decades until the chips break down and the carbon source is exhausted. ... See MoreSee Less

Further excavation with chemical treatment of the most contaminated soil will be completed in the spring of 2020. ... See MoreSee Less
